Common questions
Does a license mean a center is safe?
No. It means the center is licensed by the state and subject to its rules and inspections. It is not a safety rating. Read the inspection reports on the state's site, visit in person and ask questions.
What does 'on probation' mean?
We show the status exactly as the California Department of Social Services recorded it in its file, without comment. Open the state's record for the current status and the details.
Why does the data say May 2025?
The state's open-data file is a snapshot. A center could have changed status since. Always check the state's Care Facility Search for the current record.
Are family child care homes included?
No. This directory covers child care centers. Family child care homes are a separate license type; look them up in the state's Care Facility Search.
How do I report a problem?
Use the contact information on the CDSS Community Care Licensing child care page. If a child is in immediate danger, call 911.
